Using JBoss Seam with Maven

Written by ovstetun on 16.10.2007 | java links

Here are a few links discussing how to use JBoss Seam with Maven, Tomcat and the JBoss Embedded kernel.
Haven’t got the time to read right now, but will look into it later.

Looking at Alfresco

Written by ovstetun on 05.10.2007 | software

I’m looking at software for sharing documents at work. Our needs are not that enormous or hard, basically we have the following requirements:

  • share documents in-house and make accessible outside of our local network
  • define different access rights to documents
  • should have versioning of documents and possibly document locking

Mostly this system will be used by our marketing and sales people for working with Office-like documents. Of course some technical people (developers, architects, ScrumMasters, project managers etc) will also need to collaborate in the process.

I have looked a little bit at Alfresco as a possible solution to meet our needs. From a first-glance-point-of-view it might seem to be a near ideal fit, but I have to look a bit more into it. Guess I will deploy a version and run a short proof-of-concept with some of our management to look further into the possibilities shortly.
A hosting-partner using some kind of similar software (MS SharePoint?) could of course also be a solution.

I will come back with updates as I look more at Alfresco.

First impressions using DreamHost

Written by ovstetun on 29.09.2007 | misc, software

Previously I have hosted my blog (and a couple of other sites) myself on a server I had and shared with my cousin. Of course, when something happened it would be up to me to fix problems and monitor. Since the day our server died, my blog disappeared.
I decided I was fed up trying to manage everything myself and go for a standard hosting solution. Anders recommended using Dreamhost for hosting, as he has been very satisfied. I looked at their price plan and decided it seemed okay to me (especially nice considering the exchange-rate USD/NOK nowadays…) so I prepaid for a year.

My first impression with the service is that it is very professional and easy to work with. Managing domains and everything is simple and intuitive, and the one-click-installs are great. Took me about 2 minutes getting wordpress up and running :)
When I get the time to play around a bit with Rails I will publish “something” using Rails too and see how that works. My guess is it will be easy and effort less.

In one word: Satisfied :)

Wrapping up the golf-season

Written by ovstetun on 29.09.2007 | golf

I guess I played the last round of this golf season today. Autumn has arrived in Norway, today it was about 6 degrees and lots-and-lots of rain. Weather most definitely suitable for golf, and usually what I will expect for the rest of the autumn as well. That’s the problem with Norway…

My season has been okay. I was hoping to improve my handicap a bit more than I have managed to, but still I am pretty much satisfied. I would estimate I have played about 25 rounds of golf during the spring and summer, a number I am fairly satisfied with. I would have played more, but a lot of time during the last part of the summer was spent cycling instead of golfing. I have to train a bit more for next years season during the winter, and maybe I will finally reach my goal of a handicap of around 15 (currently 22).

Next year I will try to be more active blogging and sharing pictures about my golfing and my progress :)

Blog back online

Written by ovstetun on 28.09.2007 | misc

I have been without a blog now for half a year, and finally decided I should put it back online. Since the reason for my old blog disappearing was that the server that hosted it disappeared I don’t have access to my old posts. I guess I could (somehow) manage to dig up at least some of them, but I figure I just don’t give a damn…

Anyhows, its good to be back, and I will try to be more active in the future (how many times have I said that before, I wonder..).
